Interesting Type in Sharadin

I was looking around type in sharadin and I found this picture hanging on the wall for the communication design poster in the entrance to sharadin. Of all the examples of work from the CD poster this one caught my eye right away. I love the way the please is rendered and it really looks like the little girl is saying please. I also really love the illustration that goes along with it.

Interesting Food Type

I was looking around in my cabinets this week for interesting food type and this is what I found. I thought the font used on the marshmallow part really represented the product well because the the typeface looks fluffy and rounded like marshmallow creme is. I also liked how the out the type in white against a bright blue outline which makes it stand out a lot.

Rebus/Icon

Google is probably the best to look when you need an example of a rebus. They make one for their logo on pretty much every possible holiday. This one I thought was very clever. It was on Ghandi's birthday and his face represents to the G. I think they did a really great job of creating the image so that you can clearly see the G but it doesnt distort the picture whatsoever.

Inspirational

I was looking for examples of inspirational type and I thought this was a funny example of it. This poster was hanging up in my friends dorm room. I think this works as inspirational type because the tracking on it makes it feel really drawn out and it makes me feel like it really will be a challenge when I look at this picture.

Good Type Goes Bad

I was thinking what a good example of good type goes bad would be and I thought I would check my movie collection for either Trajan or big red type. Of course I found both. In pretty much all of the comedies I had this type was used so I figured it would be a good example for type that is good but way overused. They definitly need to come up with a new design and font for movies.

Good Use of Ligature

I found it hard to find an example of this weeks assignment of good ligature. Eventually I did find one in the hallway of my dorm. It was a bulletin board made by students for octoberfest and this symbol was in the corner of it. I'm not actually sure what it means but I feel like this is a good example of a ligature. I think that the letters fit well together yet you can easily see that they are two seperate letters.

Poor Kearning

I found this example for bad kerning while I was in my life drawing room on the desk next to me. The space between the F and the a in faculty jumped out at me right away. They need to be moved closer together by a lot. The space between the U and the s in use could also be brought together more. Other then that I think the rest of the kerning looks okay in the words.

Bad Typography

I was looking around for examples of bad typography, and I saw this when I was in the shuttle going from class back to my dorm. I don't think that the typography is particularly bad but I don't feel like this is a succesful advertisment for the store because the ad is so boring. There is nothing that draws you in. The font that they used for the headline (I'm pretty sure it's Helvetica) doesn't catch the eye at all. I think they could have done something a little more exciting with the font or colors in order to get people attention that are riding the shuttle.

Good Typography

I found this image on my roommates biology book, and I felt that it was a worthy example of good typography. I feel like the title of the book is so clean and simple and the kerning is done well. The plan sans serif white font really stands out from the green image that is behind it. I like that they kept the cover page very simple because it feels more educational to me. I have to say looking through the halls and the posters that are hung around KU I had a hard time finding an example for good typography this week.

Hand Rendered

I was looking around campus to find hand rendered type, and while I was walking through my dorm I saw these signs are written by hand. These signs are everywhere around the residential side of campus telling everyone what is and isn't allowed to be done. These signs are seen everyday by most of the students residing on campus, and they are all done by hand.

Historically Influenced Type

I was looking throughout the art building to find type that would be historically influenced. I found this poster right outside one of the rooms and this looks just like the De Stijl style that originated in Holland. It represents this style because it uses flat geometric shapes to seperate everything, and the color in it is all primary. Also the font that is in here is sans serif which is typical in the De Stijl style.

Naturally Occuring Letterform

I found this image to represnt naturally occuring letterform while I was sitting outside my dorm near some flowers. I saw that leaves created the outline for an uppercase "A" and there was a piece of mulch that stood out that formed the crosshatch of the A. The negative space in between the leave forms the closed and open counter of the uppercase A.
